Wetlands Restoration Project in the park!

Mrs. Anne Wigle-Occhipinti's 5th grade design class is working on a wetlands restoration in the park! Parks has already helped by changing mowing patterns, to let the soggy area stay in a more natural state.  Two benches have been placed nearby, a footbridge is coming soon, and different plantings are being discussed.  Such a great way for kids to learn about their environment and to care for our wonderful park.

Do you have expertise in wetlands or interest in this project?  Let us know or email

Here are some more pictures - they show the area being studied and a mass of watercress growing in the middle of the wetlands.

What could a walking/biking path down Granny White look like?

A connection from Lipscomb University to Sevier Park could take several forms.  Right now, there are 10-15 feet of right of way on each side of Granny White. In some places, there is more than this.

Nashville Next calls for a multi-use pathway down Granny White Pike. The idea would be to have a meandering path that is protected by trees and historic walls as a buffer.  It could be similar to the greenway stretch that Forest Hills has recently built in front of Granny White Market (pictured).

Putting in this kind of path, instead of curb and gutter, would mean that underground utilities would not have to be moved and that fewer trees would have to be cut.

This kind of path would dovetail with a cool local proposal for bike paths connecting this area's civil war battlefields.

Another idea would be a complete street, like the one recently built in the Gulch.  Complete streets are streets designed and operated to enable safe access for all users, including pedestrians, bicyclists, and motorists. Metro policy is to build complete street whenever possible.  Of course, this would also require cutting trees and moving utilities.

What would you like the path to look like?  Would you use it?
